Existential Crisis
Spent a couple of hours editing photos today – and realizing as much as I love them – no one else will probably ever want them. Why am I doomed to being attracted to death and dark and decay? Those things don’t generally sell – flowers and kittens and sunsets – those sell. Strange images from places where people died horrific deaths – not so much. And yet, damnit – I LOVE LOVE LOVE these images – want to cover my walls with them – turn them into wallpaper so I can feel like I can walk straight into them – straight down the rabbit-hole.

Status Update
If you just went by my recent photography you might think I’m having a nervous breakdown. I’m not – my life is in flux though – and I definitely think that’s what showing up in these recent images. Cheaper than therapy!

Illumination – Dream Life
Dream Life – one of my favorite books – and yet I’ve never read it. It’s a tiny book that fits in the palm of my hand perfectly – and lays on my mantle every day. I bought it in Seattle somewhere and love it dearly – one of the only things to survive my many moves. I don’t even WANT to read it – would rather imagine the secrets it might want tell me.
I’ve been thinking about this little red book recently – I scanned it a few weeks ago. Today Katie was singing Row, Row, Row your Boat – and the phrase “life is but a dream” struck me and reminded me of my little book. And this evening – after a fun daytrip/photohunt to a mission a few hours south of here I made this.
All the images in this are from our trip today. The ladder is from an old house by the side of the road that I stepped into on a whim (there are so many old houses by the side of the road here). The turquoise shading on the left is from an afghan that was being used as a curtain in that same house. The rock wall is from the old mission we explored. Add some obsessive photoshopping and a couple of hours later - voila – my dream life.
Let there be light!

The light in New Mexico changes constantly – particularly in the winter – the sky can go from dusky to bright pink and orange to brilliant blue just in our walks to school. The kids love to point out all the colors in the sky.
This capture is as dusk when the sky is going from warm to cool.
Let there be light!

Downtown – between the bus stop and work – I’ve taken to wandering around there in the mornings before heading into work.

Whew, I’m caught up! This was taken while in the car this evening. The first two weeks of 2009 have been a roller coaster ride. Two deaths, a rebirth, the end of a few friendships, new job for Chris, lots of work on the Cow for me, trying to balance my Cow commitments, NMAMA commitments, and job, while finding time to be present for my family. We’ve taken the last two Sunday to just be together as a family – the outing I mentioned a few posts ago last Sunday and we went to the Albuquerque Museum and Old Town the Sunday before.
I now work six days a week – five at my job job and one at my Cow job. So even though I’m tired I want to make it a point to do something cool with the kids – and they’ve really loved our “surprises” so far.

So the concept of defining the new year with a word had been around a while. I’ve never done it before but have decided to this year. And the word is…
Light!
Light, especially “good light” is something photogs are always looking for. If I can’t come up with a name for an image I call it “Good Light” And I need to “lighten up”, shake off the past year, release some old baggage and move forward. Let’s here it for light!

So I tried this a couple of years ago – but didn’t make it past March I think. Trying to take a pic a day for all of 2009. This is my first one – taken at the drive thru at Taco Bell
