open, accepting, welcoming

A little cheesy, eh? Oh well, I did rather quickly at 2am one night – and really can’t believe it won. But I’ll take it – and the chocolate that is my prize!

I’m a poet and didn’t know it! (Sorry, I had to throw that in here)

Who knows where the title comes from – if you know – tell me – and I love you forever.
I went to the Old NM State Pen. It was creepy, sad, full of light, and just as full of pitch black, tortured, and moving. I saw a lot of things I can’t even fully wrap my mind around. Sat in a gas chamber where a man was put to death, found small signs of hope in some cells, hatred cultivated in others, and forced, false cheer in murals painted everywhere. This image is five different images layered together – the poem was written on a wall in a cell. Poetry on a cell wall – someone’s need to communicate and create still exerting itself. Lots more raw images on Flickr.

I was mentioned in the Albuquerque Journal today in an article about crafting. Go to the site and search for Etsy to read the whole thing. Here’s an excerpt:

“Crafting art
Linguistic and artistic lines are beginning to blur in the craft world.
Kurt Nelson, owner of Palette Contemporary Art and Craft, says “craft” has often been unfairly maligned. The distinctions between “art” and “craft” are on their way out, “like the dodo,” he says.
He used “craft” to describe his gallery to showcase the diversity of contemporary art — from oil painting to $3,700 submerged solid glass — but none is what he calls traditional “Aunt Millie” crafts.
A few doors down in the same Northeast Albuquerque outdoor mall, artists scurry around the Wooden Cow Gallery and Art Space, a new multigenre cooperative gallery that opened last month. At the Wooden Cow, distinctions between high and low art blur as mosaic designs share space with Chinese brush work. The gallery includes pieces that could be called craft, such as resin-coated rings made from recycled Scrabble pieces.
Lorraine Klover, one of the Wooden Cow founders, is a photographer who also sells on Etsy. She says the term “craft” has been denigrated because it is associated with practical work done by women. Some locals eschew the “craft” label because of those traditional connotations.”

This is for the 8 x 8 x 8 show I am in in August. The concept is that we have eight artists, each creating 8 pieces of work that are 8″ x 8″. I have six completed, one might be done (still thinking about it), and one that is still completely inside my head. I am doing encaustics on 2 inch deep cradled boards. This will be my first encaustic series to be shown to the world – so I’m excited about that. And several of my friends are participating – and the wild and crazy Paula is the one who came up with the idea and gathered the artist together. Should be a great show – more details as it gets closer.

So yesterday will definitely go down in history as one of the weirdest of my life. I woke up yesterday feeling a little weird. My stomach had been bothering me on Wednesday also so I decided to stay home. I called my boss and work and went back to bed. Within a half hour of calling in I was in agony – repeatedly throwing up, cold sweat, and having the most excruciating pain in my lower abdomen – worse that labor. I hobbled over to my neighbor’s house and asked her to take me to the emergency room. At the emergency room an angel (aka Pete the nurse) swooped down and immediately took me back and provided blessed relief in the form of morphine. I had a CT scan and found out I had 3 kidney stones!! A little more morphine, a lot of water, and time was all it was going to take to make me feel better. What a relief!! The morphine made me a little loopy and I decided that I need to continue on with my day – that included having my work hung at the Satellite Coffee in the Nob Hill area. I sent my fabulous friend Leau over to my work with a disk containing the layout for my tags to go with the work. I got released around noon and we headed over to my work to pickup the tags and then met the lovely Spring at Satellite so that she could commence with the hanging. Shortly after leaving the hospital I started feeling horrible and after meeting Spring we went back to the hospital. A little more morphine and a few more drugs and I was back out at around 5. Leau and I sped over to Satellite to view my work (it looked awesome), and then headed over to the pharmacy to pickup my pain meds.
End of Day
Fade to Black
