The Wooden Cow! I don’t think I’ve mentioned it before but we won “Best Art Gallery” in Albuquerque the Magazine’s Best of City voting. We’re going to the awards party on Wednesday and will be having a booth there. This is a huge deal for us – we’ve only been open a little over a year, have worked so hard making this little dream come to fruition and flourish, and being recognized in this way is amazing.

Our Mission:

The Wooden Cow Gallery and Art Space is a creative environment devoted to providing area artists and craftspeople with a quality retail showroom, show space, and classroom space designed to encourage growth of the Albuquerque artist, while increasing general art awareness in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The Wooden Cow Gallery and Art Space is devoted to becoming an active part of the local visual arts, performing arts, and literary arts scene, offering a rich line-up of classes and workshops, shows, poetry readings, special events, programs, educational opportunities, performance pieces, charity events, and services designed to promote the arts and enliven the creative experience for all.

The Wooden Cow Gallery and Art Space is an artist-owned gallery that strives to make a difference. We are also proud to be working with local charities, groups, and foundations.

We believe that arts and crafts are of equal, important value to society, and that all mediums, techniques, and styles are equally embraceable, worthwhile and necessary for the transmission of human culture.  We also support other creative mediums such as local poetry and literature, music and theater.

Back from the (half) Dead

So I got kidney stones again last Thursday.  Did this stop me from going to work – NO – I brought my trusty bottle of Oxycodone and went anyway – I’m seriously insane.  Too much to do and too little time to do it.  Friday Will fell on the way to school – smacked his head on the sidewalk kind of fell.  One

Injured Will

look at his scuffed up face and the goose egg flowering on his forehead and I decided he couldn’t go to school – so we dropped Katie off and hopped on a bus – his first bus trip. He was a trooper – probably would have been fine at school – but he’s my baby and he was bleeding so he stayed with me!

Friday night was spent at the Cow – where we had a fabulous opening
Francisco Bussetti

reception for our Art of the Shrine show.  More on that later.

Saturday we went on our roadtrip and Sunday I worked at the Cow as usual – Sunday night I started filling seriously icky. Double-whammy! A cold and a UTI (something that seems to happen a lot with kidney stones) I have always gotten sick after having a KS attack – I think my body is just weakened and any old germ can come on in an wreak havoc on me. Monday – no work – today – no work – tomorrow I’m going back to work. I hate being sick!

Catching Up
02/02/2009 by Raine

Gearing up for our next show at the Wooden Cow (this Friday!) has totally drained me.  Saturday we had Will’s b-day party and Sunday I was at the gallery all day doing “the hang” as we in the art biz call it (or at least we at the Cow call it).  One of the things we strive for at the Cow is variety – and one of the ways we achieve that is by rearranging the entire gallery at the beginning of every month – this is a huge undertaking  – and we did almost all of it in about 10 hours – not bad. We have 40-50 artists in the gallery plus our theme show plus two “featured artists” and we just increased the size of our gallery space by opening up a space that’s been siting idle – I’ll take pics and share them later – it looks fabulous!  This week we have the opening on Friday and our awesome friend and neighbor is getting sworn onto the NM Court of Appeals – and we’re going to both – bus, busy, busy.

Will’s party was great too – we had a lot of fun and got to mingle our extended groups of friends and get them all together – I love that kind of stuff – and he had a blast which is the most important thing!

Art of the Shrine

The next show at The Wooden Cow is going to be awesome!  Our theme is “The Art of the Shrine” and we have two featured artists – Francisco Bussetti and Monica Francisco DeKam.  The opening reception is Feb. 6 which also happens to be the American Heart Association’s “Wear Red Day”. This event helps raise awareness about heart-related health issues in women.  Heart disease is the number one killer of women in America.  Go to their website to get educated on reducing your risk of heart disease.  So we will be participating in that as well.  Anyone who wears red, donates money to the American Heart Association, or fills out a registration card for Go Red for Women will get entered into a raffle to win heart-related artwork.

And we will have tarot readings and a caricature artist on hand as well! Plus scrumptious food as always!

Two Shows – One Day

ddlmadtwelfth

Next Friday, the 7th, is going to be one crazy day for me – I have two shows!

The first one is at Chroma Studios – another new artist-run gallery in town and is an all photography show!! WOOT! They are located at 1606 Central Ave SE, Suite 102 and it runs from 5-8:30pm.

The second one is at the Wooden Cow and is a Dia de los Muertos show. We are featuring three artists and have a juried show (I headed up the jurying and will be participating in the physical hanging of the show) and I will have a piece in the juried show. I’ve also created all the ads and collateral for the show – it’s been a crazy couple of weeks! And I don’t see it slowing down any time soon.

I’ll be starting at Chroma and then heading over to the Wooden Cow to end the evening. Two great shows – try and see them both if you can!

Wooden Cow Grand Opening Success!!

We had our grand opening celebration on Friday and it was a rousing success – lots of people enjoying and buying art, a bellydancing troupe to keep everyone entertained, a mountain of food (that kept having to be replenished), and fun, fun fun. All of the cows stepped up in a variety of ways and I think that was the key to our success. Here’s a few pics from the evening:

The Cow is Coming
07/19/2008 by Raine

So, I’ve had a very big undertaking going on for a while – I haven’t wanted to post about because I’m too superstitious for my own good – and didn’t want it to fall through. But I feel confident in sharing it now.
I am a part of a local group of artist who have come together to open a co-op gallery!! We just signed the lease today and get the keys on Monday. Tentative grand opening date is October 17 – we’ll see what happens with that. I am a vice-president and art director (that means I’m in charge of the logo, colors, making sure we are keeping our image and message cohesive) – I’m also on the web, marketing, interior design, and membership committees. I’m averaging two meetings a week plus tightening up our logo, getting our initial marketing push going, designing collateral for the grand opening – seems up late working every night these days. But I love it and I love our group and I think this is going to be a great thing for us and for the Albuquerque art community.
Oh yeah – and the name of the gallery?
The Wooden Cow
