Back from the Dead

So I had the most amazing time last weekend and hope to post about it this weekend. While I was gone Chris and the kids got this evil stomach virus thing that’s been sweeping Albuquerque. So this past week has been filled with lots of laundry and lots of holding sick babies. Here’s an pic from our trip – taken in San Antonito, NM.

In the Neighborhood – Home

Our little family

Will’s house
Aah home – while I’ve lived in many, many places – I have to say I’ve had few homes. Even as a kid – we had lots of houses, lots of neighborhoods, but few homes – few places where I felt totally comfortable and safe. I’ve been married twice before – and never felt that I had a home during either marriage – too much drama, too much stress. Neither the relationships themselves or the places we lived were ever “home” for me. Now, I am home – in Albuquerque, in this house, with the amazing family I’ve created with Chris. Bless our Home!! Love you, babe!

In The Neighborhood – Special

The block party last summer
Our newest neighbors – we love these guys!
Will’s favorite place in our neighborhood – the “tunnel” – it’s in a cool shopping center near our house. – he loves the skylights
Hmmm, “Special” was a tough one for me. I love so much about it – but what can I capture that is specifically special to me? So I decided to go with the most special part of my street – the people on it. Our street is in the heart of the Nob Hill area in Albuquerque- but it is an odd little street that is only three blocks long and doesn’t connect to any major streets. Because of that the only people that drive on it live here. We are always seeing the same people walking or riding by. Some people I only know through their dogs or children! And this street is such a great community. Everyone knows everyone. We all know what’s going on in each other lives too – we know about the pregnancies, job woes, new cars, vacations, etc. And we watch out for each other too. Last year we had a block party and almost everyone pulled out their grills, shared stories, threw water balloons and, literally, danced in the street!
I really can’t say enough about our immediate neighbors. Our neighbor across the street from us is a judge – and married us in our living room almost two years ago. Her partner is an amazing artist – when we see the glow from her garage studio we know she has had another rush of inspiration. The morning after we brought Katie home we had to rush her back to the hospital (long story – everything ended up ok) – and I ran across the street and pounded on their door around 7 in the morning. They were up and headed straight over to watch Will while we went to the hospital. When we returned in the afternoon we found the three of them having a grand time and eating Mickey Mouse shaped pancakes.
Our neighbors two doors down have two children also – almost exactly the same age as our two. Will and the older girl are “best friends” – it has been such a joy to watch the two of them growing up together – and so fabulous that they get along so well. I hope the two younger kids can have that same sort of bond. Every time I see them at my door I am so happy – I know I will get to have some good adult conversation and the kids are going to have a great time.

In The Neighborhood – Weird

This is at the back of an old funky motel – it’s about 6 blocks away from my house.
Blue Elvis – from January – when we had a record-breaking snowfall
This is an awesome house – it is huge! and has several large metal sculptures surrounding it – This is one of the places I always take friends and family when they come out to visit. I call it “the mothership”
This retablo is in a McDonalds!!! How weird is that??
The “Weird” theme for Wednesday is almost too easy for me. “Almost” because I’ve had to go through so many pics to choose only the weirdest to show here. I live in Albuquerque in the Nob Hill area – through which old Route 66 runs right through. And there is all kinds of weird here!! Remember the “Runaway Bride” who disappeared right before her wedding? She ended up 6 blocks from my house! My neighborhood is cool and funky and weird and I can’t imagine living anywhere else!! This is saying a lot since before coming to Albuquerque I was a confirmed gypsy – I’ve lived in 6 states since 2000!

These are the wedding rings I just commissioned from the amazing Kendall Murakami. Yes they are square and look at the texture!!!! This is a pic he provided me – still have to schedule a time and place to pick them up. I can’t wait to see them in person!! You can see more of Ken’s work at his Etsy store.

In the Neighborhood – Fun

First pic is of my little man – about to set out for our evening walk. Look how grown up he looks in his rockin’ new sweatshirt!! He’s always up for posing and making silly faces when I pull out the camera. Katie just usually looks at me like I’m some sort of alien. She’s a very smiley girl – but becomes very serious around cameras.
The next two pics are from my helicopter ride on Saturday. It doesn’t get more fun that a helicopter ride and the Balloon Fiesta!! Note the Darth Vader balloon just starting to take off from the field.

In The Neighborhood – Peaceful

So over on Green Jello there is a new weekly theme. The theme is “In the Neighborhood” with a different prompt for each day. I took this photo of our house yesterday morning – right before we left for the helicopter ride. After that I went on a photohunt with my very cool friend, Leau. And then I watched the LSU Tigers pull off a win against Florida. It was a close game and I yelled so much my throat hurt the this morning! A very full day – but it started with this peaceful moment.

Adventure

So today I went on a helicopter ride for the first time. And I got to take photos of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta while I was flying!!!! This was a totally unique opportunity that my wonderful husband made happen for me. Balloon Fiesta is billed as the MOST photographed event in the WORLD. Seriously folks – this was the opportunity of a lifetime for little ole me! I’m just going to show a few photos at a time as I have soooo many – and am posting more on my photoblog.

Shoeshine Parlor

Today I walked to the post office on my lunch break – took my camera just for fun. I’d seen this little shoeshine place before and decided to see if I could take photographs there. I brazenly walked in and asked and the proprietor said yes. How easy is that? I’m usually way too shy to ask something like that! Still felt a little weird about the whole thing and didn’t take many pics. This one is my fave.
